A new ophthalmic ambulatory surgery center has broken ground in Honolulu, according to multiple news reports. The Eye Surgery Center of Hawaii is part of an $8-million eye care campus at Dole Cannery Shops in Iwilei. The ASC is expected to have the capacity to perform up to 20,000 eye surgeries annually. The campus is being formed by an offshoot of Honolulu-based Cellular Bioengineering. |

Artificial Cornea - There are currently 10 million people worldwide with corneal blindness due to the lack of adequate organ donors. Cellular Bioengieering has the worldwide license for the development of a bio-integrating polymer corneal substitute which aims to return the gift of sight to these people. Currently under clinical development, the initial cohort of patients in pilot trials show promising results. |
